Turtles & Tortoises of Arizona

Arizona is home to a unique variety of native turtles and tortoises, each specially adapted to thrive in the state’s deserts, rivers, and mountain streams. From the hardy desert tortoise, which shelters in underground burrows to escape the summer heat, to aquatic species like the Sonora and Arizona mud turtles, these reptiles play vital roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

However, not all turtles seen in Arizona are native. Non-native species—often released pets like red-eared sliders—have become common in urban ponds, canals, and manmade lakes. These introduced turtles can compete with native species for food and habitat, sometimes threatening their survival.

By learning more about Arizona’s native turtles and tortoises, and making responsible choices about pet ownership and outdoor activities, we can all help protect these remarkable animals and the wild places they call home.
